Barack Obama’s Lawyers Are Suing Trump

When former President Barack Obama delivered his farewell speech at the end of his eight year term as President of the United States over two years ago, he used a poignant line that stuck with many listeners about “uniting to protect democracy”. At the time, few of us knew just how wise and insightful those words would be about the imminent future of American politics.

In honor of that, a bunch of people who used to work closely with Obama in his legal team have banded together to create an organization called United To Protect Democracy. And they are pooling their elite legal knowledge and expertise to do something extremely worthwhile – take President Donald Trump to court.

Essentially, this group has reason to believe that the current Trump White House is breaking all kinds of codes and norms for normal government business and may be in violation of a whole load of ethics codes. So, they intend to take the President of the United States and leader of the free world to court in order to finally hold him and his cronies accountable for their actions.

They have hired several staffers and have amazingly already managed to collect north of one and a half million dollars in funds. Thanks to some clever trickery with the paper work, they have managed to register as a charity organization (so can receive tax free donations) but are also allowed to do political advocacy work (which is, at the end of the day, the whole purpose of the formation of the group in the first place).

Ian Bassin, the leader of the group, told the press that he was extremely keen on making progress with their vital mission. He said:

“When people hear concerns about democracies declining into authoritarianism, they expect that moment to come in a singular thunderclap where everyone can see that this is the time. In reality, often times, democracies decline over a period of years that happen through a series of much smaller steps.”

Clearly, when this news reached the White House, it did not go down well. Getting told that you are being sued by the lawyers of the former President for endless ethics violations is never a good way to wake up in the morning. So, for some reason, the White House appeared to use Sean Spicer – remember him? – for its response, and it went about as well as you’d expect:

“This administration has raised the level of ethics training and oversight to a new level compared to the practices of the previous administration.”

Yeah, right.
