Billionaire Melinda Gates Launches Huge Warning At Trump: I’ve Had Enough

Melinda Gates might just be the direct opposite of President Donald Trump. Wife of Bill Gates (tech billionaire, founder of Microsoft and one of the richest people on the planet) she co-founded and jointly manages the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with her husband, dedicating her life and her money to finding techological and truly consequential solutions to the world’s biggest problems.

So, in comparison to Trump, she is about as upstanding a person as you could possibly imagine. While the President spends his spare time tweeting threats and insults and watching huge amounts of TV, Gates has decided to spend her time literally feeding the hungry and working towards solving world poverty. Exact opposite ends of the spectrum.

In that sense, then, perhaps it is surprising that there has not yet been a public clash between the two figures. It might be that Gates simply has better things to do than sully her intentional reputation by sparring with someone like Donald Trump, though we might have expected their paths to cross at some point.

Now, though, it has very definitely happened. Clearly, Gates is very heavily invested in the third world, so when she heard about plans from the Trump adminstration to slash aid to some of the least developed countries in the world and cut off the poorest people on Earth from the funds they so desperately need to survive, she was rightly horrified.

So, she wrote an op-ed for CNN in which she calmly but completely dismantled the idiotic and destructive policy proposal piece by piece, and it is just a delight to read.

“The data tells us that in a single generation, funding from the United States and other donor nations has helped turn the tide against infectious diseases like polio and HIV/AIDS, while driving a child survival revolution that has saved 122 million children’s lives. The world has cut extreme poverty in half and set the stage for more people everywhere to live longer, better, healthier lives than ever.”

Well said, Melinda!

Gates then goes on to address the President’s policies directly. He campaigned on a platform of America First – so screw the rest of the world, right? What’s wrong with putting ourselves first? Well, she lets Trump know in no uncertain terms:

“The facts are this: Less than 1% of the US federal budget goes to aid, and the dollars spent abroad reap dividends for our country, too. That’s why, when the White House first announced these cuts, some of the loudest voices of protest came not from overseas, but here at home. Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle, retired US military leaders, and faith leaders all spoke up in defense of foreign aid, arguing it is not just the right thing to do — it’s also vital to protecting American interests. The money we spend on foreign aid is a long-term investment in Americans themselves.”

I couldn’t have put it better myself.
