California Is Officially Suing The White House: This Is Not Up To You Anymore

If there is one thing President Donald Trump is an expert in, it is misogyny. During his time so far as President of the United States and leader of the free world, the Republican President of the United States has delivered a masterclass in how to make women uncomfortable through appalling behavior. And while he is still in the White House, since he still has at least some policymaking power, why not target the one area that American women are most concerned about?

That’s right. Trump is trying desperately to appeal to his ultra-conservative Christian base by placing horrid blocks on abortion to make it as difficult as possible for women who are in the most awful situations. He has introduced a bunch of measures called Title X, which Planned Parenthood has already lashed out at, calling them a “gag rule”, which is of course totally accurate:

“This rule intentionally strikes at the heart of the patient-provider relationship, inserting political ideology into a family planning visit, which will frustrate and ultimately discourage patients from seeking the health care they need,” Clare Coleman, head of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association, said in a statement.

Opponents of abortion were delighted by the controversial move:

“We are celebrating the newly finalized Title X rules that will redirect some taxpayer resources away from abortion vendors,” Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said in a statement.

However, this might not be as easy as Trump initially thought. It turns out that the entire political class is in fact not totally willing to turn a blind eye as Trump undoes decades of progress on women’s rights. Some lawyers and lawmakers in California are so furious over the episode that they are actually suing the Trump administration to try to put a stop to it.

“This rule gags our doctors, nurses and other care providers from fully discussing reproductive health with their patients and it bans doctors from referring patients for abortion,” Democrat Attorney General of California Xavier Becerra told reporters at a press conference in Sacramento. “Medical care should be between a woman and her doctor, not the president or the vice president of the United States.”

Good on him. It is a real shame that we have reached a point where we rely on the legal team of the state of California to keep the White House in check, but it is surely a good thing that they are standing up to him.
