Chuck Schumer’s Response To Trump’s SOTU Is Something Nobody Could Have Foreseen

Americans were all tuned in to listen to President Trump’s first State of the Union all on his own. Oh wait, excuse me, “Uniom,” as it was written on the tickets that were distributed to attendees. Among the numerous half-truths in his 80 minute speech, he managed to get some digs in at the Democrats while maintaining a holier-than-thou attitude. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was not interested in Trump’s meaningless platitudes.

“After a long and divisive year, many Americans were yearning for the President to present a unifying vision for the country. Unfortunately, his address tonight stoked the fires of division instead of bringing us closer together,” said Schumer in a statement.

Although Trump spoke about bipartisan agreements for immigration and infrastructure, Democrats saw through his paltry attempts at inspiring cohesion, even booing when he spoke about “chain migration.” Trump has recently proposed a plan that could bring citizenship for almost 2 million people that were brought to the United States as children, but includes that billions will be spent on his border wall.

Schumer couldn’t even keep the distain off his face. While Trump was going on about “set[ting] aside our differences” and summon[ing] unity,” a camera pan to Schumer showed his less-than-impressed expression.

Since Schumer is the top Democrat, I think it is safe to say that while maybe every single American Democrat who walks the Earth doesn’t fully agree with his opinions, a great majority of them do. We are not stupid. Trump can try to make everything sound great, he can say that we need to all work together to “set aside our differences” and “summon unity,” but those are empty words coming from him. Until he is the one walking the walk, not just talking the talk, the one to take the first steps at true bipartisan change, Trump would be better off not saying anything at all.
