Elizabeth Warren’s First Campaign Promise Is To Make Sure Someone Like Trump Never Wins The Presidency Again

The electoral college has been the subject of a huge amount of discussion in political discourse across the United States and indeed the world in recent days and weeks. It has seemed that it is on its way out, as more and more states opt out of the traditional and long outdated system in favor of a more directly democratic approach. It is, of course, the electoral college we have to thank for the fact that Republican nominee Donald Trump was able to win the presidential election in 2016 and take up his position as President of the United States and leader of the free world in the White House, in spite of having lost the popular vote by a quite large margin to his Democratic rival candidate, former Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton. It is also, of course, the electoral college that was responsible for President George W. Bush very, very narrowly winning the presidency – for the Republicans, yet again – rather than former Democratic Vice President Al Gore.

Now, though, change is in the air. As well as the fast growing hostility towards the electoral college, the incredible range of candidates putting themselves forward for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in anticipation of the 2020 presidential election is quite amazing, as there is a clear appetite for some real change. Candidate Elizabeth Warren seems to have recognized the opportunity here:

Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren said she supports eliminating the U.S. Electoral College during a town hall broadcast on Monday night. “Every vote matters and the way we can make that happen is that we can have national voting, and that means get rid of the Electoral College,” Warren told an audience at the historically black college Jackson State University in Mississippi. Warren’s statement on CNN came after an audience member asked the Massachusetts senator about voting rights and so-called voter suppression laws. “I believe we need a constitutional amendment that protects the right to vote for every American citizen and makes sure that vote gets counted,” she said. “We need to put some federal muscle behind that, and we need to repeal every one of the voter suppression laws that is out there.”

Whoever ends up winning the Democratic nomination next year, we absolutely need a new Blue Wave to take them into the White House and push the entire Trump family out, so that some true democracy can be restored to our great nation.
