Ex-Wife Of Disgraced White House Abuser Goes Public About Trump’s Comments Calling Her A Liar

Did President Donald Trump call the ex-wife alleging abuse from one of his staffers a liar? It sure seemed that way, according to Jennifer Willoughby, the woman in question.

Willoughby, who is the second ex-wife of Rob Porter, accused him of physical and emotional abuse during their marriage. Her claims of abuse helped lead to Porter’s resignation as White House staff secretary on Friday.

After he resigned, Trump made comments that alluded to him believing that Porter was being falsely accused.

“It’s a, obviously, tough time for him. He did a very good job when he was in the White House. And we hope he has a wonderful career,” Trump said, adding, “He said very strongly yesterday that he’s innocent.”

Trump’s comments were criticized vociferously on social media. Rather than clear up his remarks to demonstrate compassion for the women who accused Porter, however, Trump logged into Twitter on Saturday to double-down on his defense of his former employee.

“People’s lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation,” Trump wrote. “There is no recovery for someone falsely accused — life and career are gone. Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process?”

After hearing about Trump’s comments, Willoughby, who was talking with a friend at the time, was aghast.

“When Donald Trump repeated twice that Rob declared his innocence, I was floored. What was his intent in emphasizing that point?” she wrote in a Time Magazine op-ed.

“The words ‘mere allegation’ and ‘falsely accused’ [are] meant to imply that I am a liar,” Willoughby elaborated. “That [fellow accuser] Colbie Holderness is a liar. That the work Rob was doing in the White House was of higher value than our mental, emotional or physical wellbeing.”

There is strong, documented evidence of Porter’s abuse, including photographs of Holderness with a black eye, the result of Porter beating her she claims. Willoughby also took a protective order against Porter.

But that’s not enough for Trump, apparently. Perhaps seeing a bit of himself in Porter (and the allegations of sexual and physical abuse Trump has been accused of in the past), the president took a reflexive approach of defending Porter in spite of overwhelming evidence that contradicts that opinion.

These women are brave for coming forward and exposing a serial abuser in the White House. Their allegations do not deserve to be scoffed at by the president — they deserve to be taken seriously. That Trump’s impulse is to ignore their concerns and imply that they’re false speaks incredible volumes about his character.
