Former GOP Rep To Trump: “Your Issues Are Way More Serious Than Bill Clinton’s”

CNN International host Christiane Amanpour spoke with former Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) about the issues faced by President Trump, and how they might compare to those faced by former President Bill Clinton, whom Inglis voted to impeach.

Amanpour played an interview clip from 1998 in which Inglis explained why he thought Clinton should be impeached. In the clip, Inglis says, “There are issues around the world that require American leadership. The leader of the free world needs moral authority. And we’ve got a president who is sorely lacking in that regard.”

Christiane Amanpour then asked Mr. Inglis how he would measure Clinton’s “lack of moral authority” in the run up to his impeachment with what Trump currently “has or doesn’t have” (in the way of moral authority). Bob Inglis told Amanpour, “Well… I guess that young guy you were just playing there apparently hadn’t seen something called the Donald Trump show.” He then added that Trump’s behavior “is much more serious than anything we ever accused Bill Clinton of.”

Inglis noted that Clinton’s impeachment involved “perjury with the underlying matter being a sexual affair.” Trump’s situation, however, was “… something quite different. Particularly when it gets into the Russia Investigation and the firing of James Comey. These are very serious matters.”

Rank-and-file Republicans continue to eschew the investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 election, as well as accusations that the president might have obstructed justice. Most of the push-back President Trump has faced from his own party has been relegated to the BCRA (Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017). Whatever happens here, we all know one thing is for certain: Donald Trump cannot be president forever.

Personally, I believe that whoever takes office next will not only undo all the bad that Trump ever does. His legacy will be that of nothingness. That in and of itself is worth fighting for.
