GOP Congressman Called Out For Racism By His Own Party

The midterms are very nearly upon us, people. Whatever your politics, it is clear that what happens on November 6 will define the rest of Trump‘s presidency. That means that everything that happens now is extremely important because it could have very significant long-term consequences. Which makes what happened with this GOP Congressman even more baffling.

It all started when Republican Rep. Steve Stivers of Ohio, who is also the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman (basically, he runs the organization that selects the Republican candidates for all the congressional seats) launched an unprecedented attack against fellow Republican Rep. Steve King.

Stivers tweeted a direct criticism of King’s alleged racism. He said: “Congressman Steve King’s recent comments, actions, and retweets are completely inappropriate. We must stand up against white supremacy and hate in all forms, and I strongly condemn this behavior.”

Ouch! Slammed by a senior member of your own party just days before the crucial elections! That’s gotta sting.

It’s not the first time King has been on the receiving end of some friendly fire. Not so long ago, another Republican – Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida – similarly denounced him, saying: “His comments and his actions are disgusting. I would never cast a ballot for someone like Steve King.” So, having seen this before, you might expect him to have a sensible, slick, well-crafted response to make the accusers look like fools. You couldn’t be more wrong.

This is where it gets really weird. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. King’s reply, again on Twitter, read as follows:

“Americans, all created equal by God, with all our races, ethnicities, and national origins-legal immigrants & natural born citizens, together make up the Shining City on the Hill. These attacks are orchestrated by nasty, desperate, and dishonest fake news. Their ultimate goal is to flip the House and impeach Donald Trump. Establishment Never Trumpers are complicit.”

We don’t know either.

Let’s just break this down. King gets called out publicly and harshly by a member of his own party for his allegedly racist statements. His defense is that God created us all equal and that the attack was set up by the evil Democrats/Fake News Media. That logic makes zero sense.

It might just be that it’s so late in the campaign that the politicians are now all out of ideas. They’re so exhausted that they’ve reached the point of just churning out meaningless rhetoric and slogans. Fake News! Enemy of the people! George Soros! Build The Wall!

This statement from King, though, really is quite extraordinary. He makes no attempt to apologise and he shows no remorse. He boldly and confidently blames the media and the Democratic establishment for a Republican criticising him. Does anybody buy that? Does he even buy that himself?
