Here’s How Trump Is Milking Vulnerable Asylum Seekers For Cash

If there is one thing we have learned in the two and a bit years that Donald Trump has held the high office of President of the United States and leader of the free world, it is that absolutely nothing is beneath him. He is willing to go to any and all lengths in order to consolidate his power and accrue more and more wealth. And this latest story shines a brutal light on that fact by highlighting one of the most horrific and appalling ways that Trump is using and abusing his position to pocket more and more money from the American people, especially from the most vulnerable and marginalized sections of American society:

In his latest attempt to reshape the nation’s asylum laws, President Donald Trump issued a memo to Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan and Attorney General William Barr Monday, directing his administration to implement new, harsh restrictions on asylum in 90 days. According to the presidential memorandum, the administration will charge asylum seekers fees and limit their access to work permits. Despite a backlog of more than 800,000 cases and a shortage of immigration judges, the memo also directs the courts to adjudicate cases within 180 days.

While some agencies, like U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (UCSIS), charge a fee of more than $1,000 depending on the immigration program, applying for asylum — which is not adjudicated by USCIS — has historically been free. Under this new memo, asylum seekers will also be charged a fee in order to get work authorization. “The current proposal is another example of downright poor policy, and is also heartless,” Archi Pyati, the chief of policy at the Tahirih Justice Center, an organization that aids immigrant women fleeing gender-based persecution, said in a statement. “This scheme will fail to bring protection to those who need help, and will cripple the already broken system even further.”

This is truly, truly shocking. Trump clearly cannot help but to seek more and more wealth generation wherever he possibly can, even when that means targeting the most vulnerable people in America by deliberately making it harder for them to get jobs and provide for their families. As if life was not already hard enough for asylum seekers, it is incomprehensible that they should now have to pay large sums of money to the federal government, for the simple right to look for a job and earn some money to live on. This says a lot about the current administration.
