House Democrats May Turn Trump’s World Upside Down, Smack Him In Face With His Own Biggest Secret

In the midterm elections at the beginning of November, the Democrats rode the Blue Wave and took back control of the House of Representatives, making them a force to be reckoned with in Congress and a running nightmare for President Donald Trump. I know what you’re thinking – the midterms were over three weeks ago. So why on Earth are we still talking about them?

Well, firstly, although Election Day was technically on November 6, because of the uniquely idiotic way the American electoral system works, some of the close races weren’t actually settled until late this week. Also, more importantly, the midterm elections were a seismic moment for American politics because they put an end to Republican control of Congress, meaning that this GOP President and his administration will have to contend with a fired-up Democratic House for the next two years.

This would be a very bad situation for any Republican President, but it is especially bad for Donald Trump because he is particularly willing to engage in unconventional, often humiliating and potentially illegal activity whilst holding the highest office in the land. An accomplished businessman like him knows all the tricks for skirting taxes and fees and taking money that isn’t really his by cheating the system. Except that, thanks to the House Democrats, that might all be about to go up in smoke.

For unclear reasons, Trump has broken the long-held convention of Presidents disclosing their tax returns. Going by the age-old principle – if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about. For that reason, all the Presidents in recent memory have gladly opened up their finances for the whole world to see. Not Trump, though. Clearly, he is fully aware of the compromising material contained within his own tax records, so he has flat-out refused to publish them, ever since he announced his candidacy for the Presidency.

However, whether he likes it or not, he might soon find that he has no choice but to let us have a peak inside. The newly empowered Congressional Democrats are reported to be considering invoking the “committee access” provision, an obscure clause in federal law, to force the President to disclose publicly all his financial records. The law states:

“The Secretary [of the Treasury] shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request.”

That puts Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a tricky spot, as it will be him who has to demand the information from Trump on the committee’s behalf. I don’t envy him.
