Joe Scarborough Is Officially Leaving The Republican Party Because Of Donald Trump

In an interview that aired Tuesday night, Joe Scarborough — longtime Republican political figure and MSNBC host whose recent feud with Donald Trump dominated the news cycle for several days, announced he is leaving the Republican Party.

Scarborough told Colbert, “I’ve got to become an independent.”

Speaking alongside his co-host and fiancee, Mika Brzezinski, Joe called out the Republican party for its failure to stand up to president Trump.

“I think it’s inexplicable. This is well before Donald Trump was elected president that my party has betrayed their core values,” Scarborough said, citing Trump’s proposed travel ban targeting Muslim-majority countries as a policy position that he felt did not align with the Republican Party’s values. You have to ask yourself, what exactly is the Republican Party willing to do? How far are they willing to go? How much of this country and our values are they willing to sell out?”, asked Scarborough.

When asked about his party affiliation, Scarborough, who was a Republican Congressman for Florida’s first district for several years, said, “I am a Republican… but I’m not going to be a Republican anymore.”

Colbert asked both co-hosts why they thought Donald Trump, Jr. decided to tweet out a chain of emails… in which all of his previous denials that a June 2016 meeting held with a Russian lawyer had nothing to do with Hillary Clinton or the DNC were demonstrably proven to be bullshit.

Mika said, “Oh my God. I have no frickin’ idea. I mean what the… what?!”
