Nanci Pelosi Has Called Out The Entire GOP On Something Sinister No One Else Noticed

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had some choice words for Republicans regarding the reauthorization of funds for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, commonly called CHIP.

Lawmakers in the House passed a temporary stopgap measure that would keep the government funded for the next four weeks. Part of that bill included funding for the CHIP program. But Pelosi was not impressed with the outcome.

“This is like giving you a bowl of doggy doo, put a cherry on top and call it a chocolate sundae,” Pelosi explained. “This is nothing.”

Why is Pelosi complaining? The bill passed by Republicans Thursday night grants funding that will last CHIP for 6 years. Pelosi and Democratic lawmakers were hoping the program would be funded for 10 years instead.

If that sounds like nitpicking, consider this: a 10-year reauthorization of funding for CHIP would actually save the government more money long-term than a 6-year reauthorization.

Just how much would be saved? A longer extension of CHIP funding would save the American people $6 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Pelosi chastised her Republican colleagues in the House. “Republicans rejected that, even just on the terms of CHIP, they rejected the 10-year savings — $6 billion,” she explained. “Doing it for 6 years, saves $1 billion. That’s good. Doing it 10 years saves $6 billion is better. In fact, it’s best.”

This is partly why Republicans in Congress are so infuriating. When given the opportunity to make the sensible, cost-effective choice, they’ll almost always choose the option that does the opposite — like funding a popular program for less years at a higher cost.

CHIP funding originally expired in September, so it’s not as if Republicans haven’t had time to come up with a measure that would fix the problem. But instead of doing that, they waited four months to do anything about it. And on top of that, the GOP only did something once Democrats demanded it be included in a continuing resolution to keep the government open.

Nancy Pelosi is absolutely right. The Republicans’ plan for CHIP, and their whole attitude toward funding it, stinks.
