Rep. Ilhan Omar Just Made A Trump Appointee Look Like A Fool During His Confirmation Hearing

If there is one thing that President Donald Trump is really, really good at, it is appointing his friends and allies to senior positions within the White House and his administration as a whole even if they have no skills or experience relevant to the job in question whatsoever, and even if they have extremely questionable pasts.

Perhaps the most obvious example of this is Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who now sits on the highest court in the land despite several allegations of serious sexual assault against him not being investigated properly. Other big hitters include the acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, who was accused of financial fraud, and the new nominee for Ambassador to Mexico, who was seemingly only put up for the very important position because she is a member of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf club in Florida.

True to form, the President has still not learned his lesson, so he nominated a man named Elliott Abrams to be the US Special Envoy to Venezuela. For background, Venezuela has a staunchly socialist government in power at the moment, so it is not a huge surprise to anyone that President Donald Trump, who has dragged the Republican party kicking and screaming to the right of the political spectrum, wishes to make things as difficult for the Venezuelan government as possible.

Elliott Abrams used to work in the administration of President Ronald Reagan, where he had a pivotal role in crafting and carrying out American foreign policy in Latin America. So far, so good. However, it quickly became clear that he supported various groups guilty of appalling crimes simply because they opposed communism, and was also part of the Iran-Contra scandal involving the secret sales of arms to Iran and the quiet funding of right-wing figures in Nicaragua, including hiding information from Congress on the matter. Oh, dear.

Unluckily for him, at his confirmation hearing recently, Abrams found himself pitted against the new member of Congress, Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, and she was not going to tolerate any of his nonsense.

“Mr. Abrams, in 1991 you pleaded guilty to two counts of withholding information from Congress regarding the Iran-Contra affair, for which you were later pardoned by President George H.W. Bush,” Omar says. “I fail to understand why members of this committee or the American people should find any testimony you give today to be truthful.”

“If I could respond to that…” says Abrams, before Omar interjects, saying: “It wasn’t a question.”

These kinds of people are the future of the left in America. This is the proper leadership we need.
