Sarah Sanders Attacks Washington Post For Journalistic Integrity, Gets Shut Down By The Entire Press Corps

Here at Blue Side Nation, we have an ongoing fascination with White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Just last week, I reported on how she told a total straight-faced lie to the press pool about the 2016 presidential election results, only to be called out on it immediately. And yet, she never seems to change tack.

Guess what, folks. She’s only gone and done it again!

First, a bit of background. We know all too well about the horrendous instances of terrorism that have occurred in the US recently. Specifically, the occasion in which a gunman killed several people and injured many others in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, and that in which a Trump fanatic sent mail bombs to several prominent Democrats, including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Following those events, the Washington Post decided to – shocker! – report on them. Doing absolutely nothing out of the ordinary or even remotely controversial, journalists at the Washington Post wrote about what happened during those awful occurrences and commented on the political context surrounding them.

Specifically, they wrote a lot about the President’s inflammatory rhetoric and commented on the fact that many senior analysts have drawn a link between the increasing polarization in American politics (fuelled in large part by incendiary rhetoric coming from the top – yes, we’re talking about you, Donald) and the rise in violence and domestic terrorism that we have seen as of late.

Despite the clear fact that the Washington Post obviously did nothing wrong and only fulfilled the role the media is supposed to play in politics, Sarah Huckabee Sanders was having none of it. She was visibly infuriated by the paper’s reporting, and she let everyone know on Twitter.

Responding to a tweet showing the front page of the Washington Post which covered that criticism of Trump’s rhetoric, she wrote:

“Is there any tragedy the Washington Post won’t exploit to attack President @realDonaldTrump? The evil act of anti-Semitism in Pittsburg was committed by a coward who hated President Trump because @POTUS is such an unapologetic defender of the Jewish community and state of Israel.”

It wasn’t long, though, before Sanders’s blatant ignorance provoked a backlash from other journalists who were baffled by the stance she was taking. One such response came from New York Times reporter Peter Baker, who said:

“To be clear, the Washington Post is not attacking the president. The president’s critics are and the Post is writing about the conflict. That’s what newspapers do. We don’t just quote the people in power but the people who disagree with the people in power.”

Well said. It’s just a real shame that a senior official in Trump’s White House needs to have this fact pointed out to them.
