Sarah Sanders Told A Bold Faced Lie Directly To The Press And Was Immediately Called On It

Sarah Huckabee Sanders has one of the most difficult jobs in the world. We are all gobsmacked on a daily basis by the outrageous things Trump says and does and tweets, but it is a million times worse for her. As White House Press Secretary, she is tasked with defending the indefensible, somehow coming up with ways to make Trump’s ridiculous statements sounds not just reasonable but Presidential.

Every day, she goes into work to be greeted by a room full of people who have brains and can therefore see exactly what happens when Trump opens his mouth. They proceed to launch a tirade of brutal common sense at poor Sanders, who is forced to somehow insist that they are wrong. It’s an impossible task. I know I couldn’t do it.

We have heard all sorts of defenses from the Trump team as they desperately try to figure out how to cover for him. Kellyanne Conway‘s “alternative facts” defense of Trump’s bare-faced lies came straight after his inauguration – nearly two years’ worth of Trumpian nonsense has happened since then. No wonder, then, that the people at the top of the Trump chain are being forced to come up with new, inventive and frankly ridiculous ways to answer journalists’ questions.

We saw this to hilarious effect during a recent White House press briefing. Hit with yet another question about the appalling things the President apparently unashamedly says and does on a regular basis, Sanders was no doubt frantically searching for a valid answer, and the best she could come up with was that Trump was democratically elected President so it is right that he enacts the things he flippantly promised on the campaign trail. A weak argument, sure, but it’ll do.

There’s just one problem. Yes, Trump got the 270 electoral college votes he needed to get into the White House, but he actually lost the popular vote. So if we’re talking about a democratic mandate from the people to implement his policies, Hillary Clinton is in a stronger position than him.

You can just imagine the horror growing in Sanders’ head as she came to this realization. What can she do? The numbers don’t lie.

As it probably says in The Handbook For The Senior Trump Official, there is a simple solution. Ignore the undeniable facts and plow on with your statement, no matter how false and laughable it might be. And that’s what she did, by proclaiming that Trump won the election by an “overwhelming majority” of 63 million votes.

Journalists almost instantly called her on the alternative fact.

Given that Hillary Clinton got 65.8 million votes, Trump’s vote share is neither overwhelming nor a majority. But why should that matter, right?
