The Democrats Just Proposed Policy To Stifle Trump’s Abilities As President, He’s Going To Be Livid

Three senators have proposed new legislation to prevent President Trump from doing anything stupid, like launching an air strike against North Korea. The legislation is spearheaded by Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy with support from other Democratic senators Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Cory Brooker (D-NJ). The bill would prevent Trump from making a rash decision – issuing a nuclear or conventional air strike – unless Congress approves the plan.

He asked Republican lawmakers to consider the bill, as this would prevent him from starting a war. This particular iteration of the bill reintroduces legislation first brought up back in January by Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA.) That bill also called for a declaration of war from Congress before the president could launch a nuclear strike. Earlier this month, the North Korea deputy ambassador to the United Nations said that nuclear war “may break out at any moment.”

This is a tricky situation – on one hand, this would be a restriction of executive power. On the other, Trump needs to be restricted. At this moment, Trump can order a nuclear attack at absolutely any moment if he has cause to believe there is a threat to the United States. Although the Secretary of Defense can refuse to allow the order to pass through the appropriate ranks, they can be immediately fired and replaced with someone more willing to carry out his plans.

I think what is most important here is whether or not the bill finds Republican backing. If it does, it shows that they do not have enough faith in their president to keep from accidentally on purpose beginning a war and are willing to go to great lengths to restrict his authority. If they don’t, that shows that they believe in his humane sanity and might support with any measure, including supporting a nuclear war. I guess only time will tell how this plays out.
