This Disgusting Transphobic Rant By A Republican Representative Is Exactly What’s Wrong With The Right

Why does the Republican party routinely remind me of great-grandparents? Why do we, as a nation, tolerate this? Why is the GOP sort of allowed a couple of decades to right itself on all things civil rights?

As a Southern woman, I can pretty much guarantee you that every white adult in my zip code has problematic great-grandparents. If they’re still alive — they’re probably all 31 flavors of xenophobic. They’re racist, misogynistic, internally misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic. If you can imagine an identity that deviates even a degree from white, cisgender, patriarchial, heteronormativity— they’re going to give you a nope. A hard nope. The margin of error on this is negligible.

But, you know, we all sort of reconcile ourselves that Mamaw or Papaw are in their mid-90s and so we live in quiet, desperate hope that they just don’t embarrass the shit out of us in public… or ruin Thanksgiving dinner. But ultimately we’ve given up on progress.

But Republicans of all ages are allowed to get on the House Floor and be ass-backwards on matters of civil rights and social justice. We pretty much expect it.

So, in keeping with GOP tradition, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), “When it’s advertised that the United States Congress is in favor of taking men and surgically making them into women with the money that they would use to protect the nation otherwise — then it is an advertising bonanza for the radical Islamists. Because my Muslim friends tell me, the recruits, you’re right, if that’s how stupid they are, this society has no right to remain on the earth. We need to take them out. They are too stupid.”

Obviously appalling shots were fired against the Trans community, but also the Muslim community. And doesn’t it blow your mind a little bit that Gohmert’s Muslim friends (plural; I’m dubious) are passing on hot tips from the Radical Islamist Goebbels Handbook to him? A thoroughly random Congressman from Texas? They must be trolling.

I’m definitely ready anytime anyone cares to explain just what in the everloving fuck is meant by Congress being “in favor of taking men and surgically making them into women.” That’s one hell of a bombshell, isn’t it?! Like, cisgender dudes are being… abducted to make this happen? Is his what he’s intimating here?

Sit down, Papaw.
