Top Republican Official Abandons Trump And Goes Off: You Are One Step Away From A Dictator

There are always those who like to take things too far in politics. Sure, many of the policies of President Donald Trump display blatant racism and xenophobia, especially in the area of immigration, but he is not a Nazi, as he is often called. The Nazis literally tried to kill entire races of people. However, even when controversial, there are times when quite radical sounding language is actually necessary to truly denounce and caution the population about a leader and their worrying direction of travel. This is one such occasion.

Max Boot is “one of the original Never Trumpers”. He is a big voice in Republican foreign policy but he is fiercely opposed to the Trump White House. Boot, who is the Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Senior Fellow in National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, gave an interview to Politico in which he essentially said that Trump was one step away from being “a dictator”. His reasoning, though, is totally sound. This is what he had to say:

Maybe a little. Look, I think the good news story of the first year of the Trump presidency is that there are checks and balances. I mean, I think that Trump, as a personality type, is probably not that different from a Mussolini, a Peron, a Chavez. And if you were operating in Argentina or Italy, he would probably be a dictator by now.

But luckily, he’s not operating in those countries. He’s operating in a country that’s had a constitutional government for more than 200 years. And we’re seeing the courts step up. We’re seeing elements of the bureaucracy step up. Congress even occasionally steps up, for example, by passing Russia sanctions. And I think the media has done a tremendous job of holding his feet to the fire, and exposing all of the crazy machinations of this administration.

So, I mean, that’s what gives me faith in America. I mean, I’m downcast because we could elect somebody as unqualified and unfit for the office as Donald Trump, but you know, to the extent that my faith in American is reaffirmed, it’s reaffirmed by people like Robert Mueller, and the investigative teams of The Washington Post, and New York Times, and elsewhere, who are working to keep his excesses in check.

Here at Blue Side Nation, we could not agree more strongly with Max Boot here. True, strong journalism is the only way to hold rogue nationalistic politicians like President Donald Trump to account. If we hold firm to these fundamental institutions of our democracy and we manage to survive the Trump presidency with the free press somehow emerging vaguely in tact, we can consider that a victory.
