Trump To Implement DNA Checks For All Immigrants Under The Guise Of A “Pilot Testing Program”

The Trump administration is doing everything it can to make life as difficult as possible for migrants:

The Department of Homeland Security will start a DNA testing pilot program next week to help identify and prosecute individuals posing as families in an effort to target human smuggling. The Rapid DNA testing, as it’s known, involves a cheek swab and can, on average, provide results in about 90 minutes, a senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement official said.

However, as with all of the policies of this administration, it will almost certainly have much worse consequences than its proponents could possibly have imagined:

But the process could have adverse effects. There are concerns over whether certain familial relationships — like an aunt and her nephew, for example — would constitute a valid relationship in the eyes of the federal government. There’s also the issue of privacy concerns. Misuse of data has led to wrongful convictions. Some researchers are concerned that these families, who are primarily from Central America and speak indigenous dialects, may not fully understand the concept of DNA testing well enough to give informed consent. “We’re talking about populations of indigenous people,” said Ysabel Duron, founder of the Latino Cancer Institute. “We don’t even know if some of them come from certain tribes, where they could have beliefs against DNA testing.”

This is just a tiny portion of what could go wrong with this incredibly poorly thought out policy. Considering that the Republican party claims to be the party of small state and freedom, and constantly lashes out at Democrats for “dangerous big state socialism”, it is quite amazing that they do not see the irony and hypocrisy of allowing the government to literally seize and store people’s DNA data, possibly the most intimate information it is possible to own about a human being, for their own purposes.

Of course, all of this is very clearly routed in the kind of racism and xenophobia that allowed Donald Trump to get himself elected to the position of President of the United States and leader of the free world. Making migrants the ultimate scapegoat and blaming their existence for every problem in the world is much easier to do than to actually solve those problems. The consequences, though, are plain to see, and are extremely concerning for anyone with a conscience. With any luck, next year will bring a new Blue Wave that can put an end to this inhumanity once and for all.
