Trump Told A Big Lie In His State Of The Union Address That Everyone Missed

Published

President Donald Trump has become an expert over the last few years in using his big speeches, when all the attention is on him, to tell blatant and outrageous lies but frame it in such a way that nobody bats an eyelid, because it is wrapped up in so much empty rhetoric that it is hard to tell what is political nonsense and what is actual fact. Then, afterwards, he can use the newfound confusion and internalized misconceptions to his advantage.

This is what he tried to do in his hallmark State of the Union address earlier this month, but it has backfired on him quite spectacularly. Clearly, the issue of the day for the President of the United States and leader of the free world is his insane Border Wall along the border with Mexico, and essentially, he is trying to somehow convince the rest of the world of American politics that the problems we face with illegal border crossings and migrant crime are so unbelievably serious that the only possible solution is a very, very drastic one such as a Border Wall.

The way he did this in the State of the Union speech was in reference to the town of El Paso in Texas. For Trump’s ridiculous narrative to work, he has to make it seem like towns in El Paso are under siege from an endless stream of illegal migrants from Latin America. He then has to give the impression that the Wall is the way to solve this. So, he made the following claim:

“The border city of El Paso, Texas, used to have extremely high rates of violent crime — one of the highest in the country, and considered one of our nation’s most dangerous cities. Now, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of our safest cities.”

As it turns out, saying that this statement is not entirely clue would be a massive understatement. Something Trump never expected just happened: the Sherriff of that town came out to publicly denounce what he said, slamming him and proving him wrong definitively. Here’s what Sherriff Richard Wiles had to say:

“The facts are clear. While it is true that El Paso is one of the safest cities in the nation, it has never been … considered one of our nation’s most dangerous cities… And, El Paso was a safe city long before any wall was built. President Trump continues to give a false narrative about a great city that truly represents what this great nation is all about.”

Ouch! How can Trump continue to push for his Wall in the light of this revelation?
