Trump Wants A New Immigration Law That’s Actually Been In Place For Over 20 Years

President Trump said on Wednesday evening that immigrants who enter the United States should not be eligible for welfare benefits for five years and promised that his administration would be “putting in legislation to that effect very shortly.”

The president told the Cedar Rapids crowd that, “The time has come for new immigration rules which say that those seeking admission into our country must be able to support themselves financially and should not use welfare for a period of at least five years.”

Trump’s administration is going to put this legislation into effect very shortly? What’s truly amazing is about this is that the period of time was so short. As a matter of fact, it already happened! Over 20 years ago!

But don’t worry. Trump did not avail himself of a time machine or any particular magic. In 1996, Bill Clinton’s administration passed the  Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 which reads that an immigrant is “not eligible for any Federal means-tested public benefit” for a period of five years. The five year period begins on the date the immigrant enters the country.

There are exceptions under the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 regarding what does or does not qualify as a federal means-tested public benefit. Certain exceptions are made for emergency medical assistance and disaster relief.

Cheetolini also regurgitated his build-a-wall bullshit because this was a campaign rally. Of course it’s a campaign rally. It’s always a campaign rally, unless it’s a tweet. As Americans, we’re unaccustomed to a sitting president who continues to campaign for reelection immediately after taking office — but we’re also unaccustomed to sitting presidents who are completely ignorant of our legal processes, who tweet in the manner of a 12 year old, and/or who collude with foreign governments.

President Trump is singular in so many ways.
