Trump’s Pardoning Got Out Of Control, So Adam Schiff Shut It Down

President Donald Trump is a textbook oligarch. Since he has a full career behind him of being a prominent mogul and businessman, and because he inherited insane amounts of money from his family empire, he has an address book full of extremely powerful contacts and he helps them out and they help him out. Now that he is President of the United States, he has one thing at his disposal that no one else in the entire country has: he now has the power to pardon people who have been convicted of an offense so that they can essentially get off scot free. Trump, being Trump, has of course found it impossible to resist abusing this power to his own ends. He has pardoned many of his friends even when it is totally inappropriate, and he is threatening to use his pardoning power to ruin the outcome of the Mueller investigation.

The investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into President Donald Trump, his Organization, his White House, his administration, his close circle and his White House seems now like it has been going on for many lifetimes. It certainly feels like much longer than two years ago at this point that the Justice Department (specifically, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein) found itself forced to commission the former Director of the FBI to set up a probe to investigate the claims that the campaign to elect then Republican candidate Donald Trump as President of the United States and leader of the free world during the 2016 presidential election colluded with Russian state actors in order to steal the result of the election and the White House from rival Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, and then committed obstruction of justice afterwards in a desperate attempt to cover it up.

Trump might pardon his allies like Paul Manafort, or he might even try to pardon himself, which would be incredible, but sounds exactly like something he would do. However, Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff is trying to put a stop to it,with a truly heroic bill:

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee announced proposed legislation Thursday to ensure that Congress gets the investigative records associated with any witnesses in the federal probes of President Trump’s campaign, businesses and alleged foreign ties if the president pardons them. Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) framed the bill as an attempt to ensure that, if Trump — or any president who follows him — uses pardons “to cover up crimes involving any President, his/her family or associates, Congress finds out.”

“Presidents can use a pardon to rectify an injustice,” Schiff wrote on Twitter. “They may not use it to obstruct justice.”

We need more of this kind of honest, accountable conduct in our politics. Desperately.
