US District Court Judge William Alsup Just Embarrassed Trump And Sessons On Immigration

Published

U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup ruled the Trump administration must resume accepting renewal applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program better known as DACA. The DACA is a program originating under Barack Obama’s administration and helps to provide work permits and partial legal status for those who entered the country illegally as children–also known as Dreamers, according to Politico.

Recently, attorney general Jeff Sessions told the press the program was illegal. However, Alsup countered Session by saying, “Jeff’s reasoning was based on a flawed legal premise.”

Based on Alsup’s ruling, the administration would have to continue to accept renewed applications for those who failed to file them by October 5. And for those who need to file a renewal application in the future, they would still be allowed to if Alsup’s ruling remains–a higher court would have to overrule Alsop’s ruling to halt this process.

Of course, being the humanitarian that he is, president Donald Trump was not a fan of this ruling. He sounded off via Twitter, “It just shows how broken and unfair our court system is when the opposing side of the case (referencing DACA in this instance)…almost always wins before being reversed by higher courts.”

He also used this time to reinforce his idea for a safer country. “As I made very clear today, our country needs the security of the Wall on the Southern border, which must be part of any DACA approval.”

You have to give the devil his due, Trump did a great job of using the DACA as a bargaining chip of to get his way with the building of the Wall. And he’s been consistent in this approach. This past month, he tweeted, “The Democrats have been told, and fully understand, that there can be no DACA without the desperately needed wall at the Southern border, and an end to the horrible chain migration and ridiculous lottery system of immigration. We must protect our country at all costs!”

Ah, spoken like a true diplomat. The Trump administration hopes the Supreme Court or the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals overturns this ruling. In the meantime, Alsup’s ruling strengthens the cases of the Dreamers who didn’t have a choice of where they were going to live. They followed their families to this country, and they should have the same right to stay and work that was afforded to our ancestors when they arrived in America.
