In an new interview with Jonathan Karl of The Atlantic, former Trump-era Attorney General William Barr talked about his behind the scenes battles with former President-Donald Trump as he tried to get Barr’s Justice Department to intervene and try to help his re-election chances by agreeing with his baseless election fraud claims.

Barr admitted he thought the Trump’s claims were “bullshit” and also revealed that Senate Minority (then-majority) leader Mitch McConnell implored him to try and convince Trump that there was no election fraud and that he needed to drop the campaign of false claims, most likely because he was aware of the impact it would have on the GOP’s keeping a Senate Majority with the Georgia runoff election, which they did in fact lose.

According to the report, McConnell told Barr:

“Look, we need the president in Georgia, and so we cannot be frontally attacking him right now. But you’re in a better position to inject some reality into this situation. You are really the only one who can do it.”

Barr allegedly replied:

“I understand that. And I’m going to do it at the appropriate time.”

Later, on a different call, McConnell again asked for Barr’s help, saying he needed him to step up and get Trump to drop the election fraud nonsense, saying, “Bill, I look around, and you are the only person who can do it.”

Barr later had an exchange with Trump, who claimed he was ignoring him and pinned it on an Associated Press report that Barr was not supporting him in his fraud claims.

“Did you say that?” Trump asked.

“Yes,” Barr responded.

“How the f*ck could you do this to me? Why did you say it?” an angry Trump shot back.

“Because it’s true,” Barr responded again.

According to the report, a “livid” Trump replied “You must hate Trump. You must hate Trump.”
